Nassau House Fire: 1 Dead, 1 Critical, Police Say
Police say firefighters arrived to flames engulfing the home Monday.
BAYVILLE, NY — One person is dead and a second was critically hurt in a house fire in Bayville, police said. Flames swept through the home on Bayville Park Boulevard around 2 p.m. Monday, Nassau County police told Patch. A helicopter flew one person from the burning home to a hospital.
On Monday evening, Nassau County police said flames had engulfed the home by the time firefighters arrived. Two people were inside and one died at the scene.
The second person, identified only as a man, was found with serious injuries. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment in critical condition.

Further details, including the cause of the fire and the victims' names, weren't immediately known.

Neighbors told News 12 that an elderly couple who used wheelchairs and walkers to get around lived in the home. They saw the man lying on the lawn with chest burns crying out for his wife, who was trapped inside.
Three firefighters also had to be rushed to a hospital for treatment for minor injuries, police said.
More than 100 firefighters in all were called to the scene from the Bayville Fire Department and eight others. About 20 pieces of apparatus were sent to the home.
