Two workers were installing septic rings at a private home when a sand wall gave way. They became trapped under 5 feet of dirt.
UPPER BROOKVILLE, NY — Authorities on Thursday identified the two workers who died when a sand wall collapsed at a work site in Upper Brookville. Deniz Dos Santos Almeida, 57, and Max Antonio Turcios, 46, died Tuesday when they became trapped under 5 feet of dirt and sand, Nassau County police said.
The workers were installing septic rings at a private home near Wolver Hollow and Pine Valley roads when the sand wall gave way, officials said. Rescue crews swarmed the home around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday to search for them.
Turcios was pulled from the trench and declared dead by medics Tuesday night. Rescue teams evacuated the trench when more sections of the sand wall threatened to collapse, police said.
