Gowanus Brewery And Bakery Fight Hunger With Stale Bread Beer

Landfill-bound bread is headed to a pint glass near you.

GOWANUS, BROOKLYN — A Gowanus brewery and bakery are diverting landfill-bound bread to a pint glass near you.

The stale bread brew comes courtesy of Threes Brewing and Runner & Stone, who are partnering with Food Bank for New York City to draw attention to food waste in New York City, according to a new report.

Runner & Stone's left-over baguettes will become a special rye ale Threes is calling “Food for Thought,” according to a Food Bank press release.

“Food For Thought is our humble contribution to help raise awareness to the issue of food waste,” Threes Brewing writes on their website, noting that over 30% of the city’s garbage is food waste.

Its partner, Food Bank for New York City, diverts over 1 million pounds of food each month to feed hungry New Yorkers, according to the brewery. Additionally, for every draft pint of Food for Thought sold, five meals will be donated to hungry New Yorkers, according to the release.

The City’s Department of Sanitation has also recognized the need to divert food from its waste stream, as it is a major source of free meals for rodents, and has plans to greatly expand composting citywide.

Until then, you can help raise awareness by raising a pint of Food for Thought.
