City To Add Synthetic Turf To J.J. Byrne Playground's Lawn

The city will replace the 2,558-square-feet lawn area of the park with synthetic turf starting next year.

PARK SLOPE, NY — The city will replace the large lawn area of the J.J. Byrne Playground with synthetic turf starting next year, officials said.

The Parks Department released a call for contractors on the project Wednesday to replace the 2,558 square-foot lawn with fake grass, according to the agency.

The playground — inside Washington Park — currently has a natural lawn, but it's too heavily used and can't be kept up with just re-seeding, the Parks Department said. The city estimated the lawn replacement will cost less than $500,000.

The J.J. Byrne Playground re-opend in 2012 after a multi-million dollar renovation that added new equipment, a fountain and more.

The deadline to submit bids to the city for the construction is on Jan. 18, with construction starting sometime after April 2018.
