Nitehawk Cinema's New Park Slope Sign Is Hated By Community Board

Community Board 6 voted to approve work to Nitehawk's under-construction new location, provided they change their proposed sign.

PARK SLOPE, NY — The local community board hated Nitehawk Cinema's proposed sign to replace the old Pavilion Theater logo and called on the city to get them to change it.

Community Board 6 voted to approve a plan for Nitehawk to spruce up the front of the 188 Prospect Park West building provided they change the proposed red-and-black sign on top of the theater's marquee.

"That's so ugly," one board member called out at Thursday night's meeting during the vote.

A spokeswoman for the theater did not have a comment for the story.

Nitehawk, which is revamping the former Pavilion Theater, filed plans with the Landmark Preservation Commission to seal a masonry opening on the front of the building, add new poster boxes, doors and repaint the fire escape on the side of the building beige to match the outside.

The board nearly unanimously voted to approve the plans under the condition Nitehawk comes up with a new sign and paints the fire escape the original color of black instead.

The decrepit Pavilion Theater was originally slated to become a controversial condo development until Nitehawk took it over in 2016 to turn it into a seven-screen, 650-seat movie house.

It will be the company's the second location of the dine-in theater after their Williamsburg spot and they plan to open it in the spring.

The plans for the latest renovation are scheduled to go in front of the LPC at their Tuesday meeting.
