Despite Carcinogenic Fumes, Gowanus School To Reopen: Report
Contamination is just "slightly above" normal levels, health officials say.

GOWANUS, NY — In March, state investigators found petroleum contamination and benzene, a known carcinogen, in the basement air of PS 372, Gothamist reports.
However, officials from the Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of Health have told parents that no protective measures will be in place by the start of school, which is tomorrow.
Officials say this is because the contamination is just “slightly above” normal levels and there’s no risk to health or need for people to relocate, according to Gothamist.
