The group was formed in the wake of the 1970's financial crisis to encourage "greedy, heartless" New Yorkers to fill in gaps left by a slashed city workforce, according to an iconic New York Times ad placed by co-founder and Newsweek editor-in-chief Osborn Elliott.

In 2021, the group awarded over $1 million in grants to 278 local community groups responding to the neighborhood-level effects of the pandemic.

No Park Slope groups or businesses were awarded grants in 2022, according to a map on their website, but that doesn't mean Park Slope won't in 2023.
