Help Fix The Little Free Library At CHiPS In Park Slope This Weekend

The library door is broken, the paint has faded and it's been stuffed with trash. Now, local can help restore the free book exchange.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — The Little Free Library outside of CHiPS, a Park Slope soup kitchen and shelter, has filled up with trash.

For years, the take-one-leave-one library was packed with books that people could read for free— as intended — but, as of late, the library has fallen into a state of disrepair; the door is broken, the paint has faded and the facade has been scribbled with graffiti.

Neighbors, though, have a chance to fix up the library this weekend at a neighborhood event, where families will repaint and make signs on behalf of the library.

The event is organized by Citizen Squirrel, a group that helps families with elementary school students participate in civic engagement.

Organizers asked that participants bring books to put in the library, and individually wrapped baked goods for CHiPS' food pantry service.

The library fix-up event will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at CHiPS, which stands for Community Help in Park Slope and is located on Fourth Avenue near the corner of Sackett Street.

CHiPS, which serves food to nearly 200 people per-day six days a week and is a home to up to 10 mothers and their children at a time, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary in Park Slope, and is looking to expand further into the neighborhood in the upcoming decades, Patch reported.
