Jeremiah and Keturah Grünblatt, Clinton Hill newlyweds who were well known in the NYC opera community, tied the knot on Sept. 27 in a low-key ceremony along the East River in Williamsburg.
“Married. #JKWedding,” Keturah wrote on Instagram that sunny Sunday, beneath a photo of the couple in their wedding attire.
But just three days later, while enjoying their honeymoon along the Long Island sound — ”the water is so clear on this side of the island,” Keturah wrote online — the unthinkable happened.
The Grünblatts were traveling in their small SUV across the Route 25 railroad bridge in Greenport, Long Island, around noon on Wednesday when, for unknown reasons, the SUV swerved into the path of an oncoming transit bus.
Forty-two-year-old Jeremiah, who was driving, was killed at the scene, according to Southold Town Police.
He is survived by his 39-year-old wife Keturah.
“She was conscious through the whole thing,” Keturah’s father told the Southold Local, a Long Island newspaper. “She’s still in shock. They were very much in love. ... They were just perfect for each other.”
He said Keturah and Jeremiah had been together for several years and both worked in the world of opera. (Ketruah is reportedly a director, and Jeremiah a set designer.)
“They had a lot in common,” Keturah’s father told the paper. “They’d collaborated on a couple of pieces recently.”
A close friend of Jeremiah’s brother set up a GoFundMe page on Thursday to raise money that will “help [the Grünblatt family] through this tragic time.”
In August of last year, Jeremiah shared photos on Facebook of a small wooden box he’d made to hold Keturah’s engagement ring.
“And then I asked Keturah Stickann to marry me,” he wrote. “And she said yes.”
