Keep the Needy Warm: NYC Needs 80,000 More Coats!
The annual drive has collected only 20 percent of needed coats. Here's the low-down on how and where to drop off your lightly used winter wear.
You may have seen the ad on the subway: a shivering Statue of Liberty huddled in an overcoat.
Perhaps you've donated in past years, but if you can find a spare parka or winter coat in your closet, make sure to drop it off before Dec. 31, because the less fortunate really needs to keep warm this year.
Donations have been down, and despite adding new drop-off locations and starting the coat drive two weeks earlier, New York Cares Coat Drive has only collected 20 percent of what they need: 20,000 of the 100,000 coats necessary to keep needy and homeless men, women and children warm as temperatures drop.

Last year donations were also down and 10,000 kids didn't get coats, according to New York Cares, which runs the 23-year-old drive.
So, if you're able to find an extra coat, here's where to drop them off in Park Slope and Sunset Park (or see map for more options):

- The NYPD 78th Precinct, 65 6th Ave. at Bergen St., open 24 hours.
- The NYPD 72nd Precinct, 830 4th Ave. at 29th St., open 24 hours.
Coats should be gently used and freshly laundered.
