A mixed and chaotic crowd of Donald Trump’s fans and haters gathered outside the Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan on Thursday afternoon, shouting each other down while the Republican presidential primary candidate gave a press conference inside the tower.
Among the quarrelers, much to the shock of passerby, was a handful of people wearing KKK hoods.
When questioned by reporters at the scene, those in KKK costumes said they were making a sarcastic statement against Trump’s “racist,” anti-immigrant platform.
The protesters held a sign saying “Trump: Make America Racist Again (Great).“
“These people built America,” shouted a member of the protest, not in costume. “If you don’t believe that, then take these skyscrapers and shove them up your a**.”
CNN producer Noah Gray reported that at one point, “a small physical altercation” broke out between protesters and Trump’s personal security.
A reporter with the Vito and Vito Show live-streamed some of his interviews with protesters on Periscope. ”Why don’t you like Trump?” he asked a young kid in a devil costume. “Because he’s such a racist,” the kid said. When the reporter asked him whether the U.S. should close its southern border, the kid shook his head, ”No.”
Meanwhile, inside his tower, Trump was reportedly signing a pledge to support whichever candidate wins the Republican primary, and not run third-party.
According to a video posted by USA Today, Trump also told a tight gathering of supporters inside the tower: “While we’re in this nation, we should be speaking English. Whether people like it or not, that’s how we assimilate.”
