'Movies Under The Stars' Returns To Brooklyn This Weekend

BROOKLYN, NY — With the promise of balmy spring days ahead, a long-running, free outdoor movie series is returning to Brooklyn this weekend.

This May, "Movies Under the Stars" will bring super heroes, the latest tour de force from Daffy Duck and (hu)man's best friend to Brooklyn Parks. So bring your kids (or not), a blanket, snacks and drinks (no glass bottles or booze, please) and enjoy the spring weather, your neighbors and some action-packed ... action.

Remember rain or extreme weather can prompt a screening's cancellation — the "Spider-Man: No Way Home" showing was initially scheduled for Friday, but has since been postponed due to weather. Saturday's "Space Jam" screening, though, is still on for Saturday as of Friday afternoon.

The upcoming May screenings are among more than 150 citywide that will show this summer, all of which are free of cost.

Movies Under the Stars begin at dusk, meaning the screenings at the beginning of the season — such as those this weekend — start at 8 p.m., but get progressively later, instead starting at 8:15 p.m. or 8:30 p.m., as the summer continues.

Seats are generally first-come-first served, so event organizers encourage movie-goers to bring their own blanket and arrive early, but some chairs are reserved for seniors and people with disabilities (contact (212) 360-1430 or accessibility@parks.nyc.gov for accessibility information).

Movie-goers are also encouraged to bring things to eat and drink, but glass bottles and alcoholic beverages are prohibited, according to organizers.

Movies Under the Stars is one of several citywide, outdoor movie events during the summer, many of which gained popularity at the onset of the pandemic — outdoor alternatives to theaters that will likely see favor this summer, too, as the city raises its COVID-19 alert to "medium" amid a rise in cases due to new, highly contagious variants.
