Park Slope Bank Robber Arrested In New Jersey, Police Say

James Buccanfuso, 41, and Sergey Demidenko, 38, were arrested in Stafford Township for bank robberies in New Yor and New Jersey.

PARK SLOPE, NY — The man who robbed a Park Slope bank was arrested in New Jersey and linked to six other robberies, local police announced.

Sergey Demidenko, 38, of Brooklyn, and his getaway driver James Buccanfuso, 41, of Manhattan, were arrested on Tuesday for the string of bank robberies in New York and New Jersey, the Stafford Township Police Department announced on Wednesday.

For each of the cases, Demidenko walked into the bank with a hoodie and sunglasses then pass the teller a note demanding cash. He would flee on foot and meet up with Buccanfuso — who helped plan the stick-ups — nearby, police said. The duo would then drive away in a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The pair first struck on Jan. 6 when Demidenko stole an unknown amount of cash from the Capital One Bank at 516 Fifth Ave., authorities said. They then robbed a Chase Bank in Manahawkin, N.J., when local police started to track them.

New Jersey detectives later contacted the NYPD who let them know of a similar pattern of robberies in Brooklyn and upstate New York, according to Stafford Township police.

The duo also got cash from a Wells Fargo Bank in New Jersey on Jan. 24 and a Roslyn Savings Bank in Massapequa, N.Y., on Jan. 25, police said.

They were also behind the attempted robberies of a Chase Bank in Sheepshead Bay on Jan. 25 and one at Wells Fargo in Manahawkin on Jan. 26, Stafford Township police said.

New Jersey detectives found the Jeep Grand Cherokee parked in an Atlantic City casino parking lot then arrested Demidenko and Buccanfuso on Tuesday. The men are in jail awaiting federal bank robbery charges, police said.
