Park Slope Food Coop Considers Opening Second Location

The food co-op started an online survey this week to gauge input from members and residents on opening a second location of its store.

PARK SLOPE, NY — The Park Slope Food Coop could bring its collective health food store to another part of the city.

The famous co-op started an online survey Thursday to gauge members and residents thoughts on the possibility of expanding past their 782 Union St. spot, which they said is almost at capacity.

"A second location has been proposed as a way to continue serving our core mission beyond our limited capacity on Union St.," the co-op wrote in the survey. "Other potential reasons why a second location may be appropriate include: financial proof that the coop is a needed and viable model; and a desire to serve additional communities within greater NYC."

The co-op plans to use the survey to gather concerns and priorities from participants about the plan to publish a "comprehensive study" in the summer on the new location.

The survey doesn't clarify if any specific spots are being considered for the second food co-op or when it might open. The co-op did not respond to requests to comment for this story.

The Park Slope Food Coop first launched in 1973 where members are required to works shifts to get access to cheaper prices on groceries, according to their website.

The co-op, which has more than 17,000 members, has been nearing capacity in their two Union Street buildings and started a study committee in 2016 to look into a new location.
