PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — A manhole caught fire and exploded in Park Slope on Wednesday night, shattering windows and sending a boom throughout parts of the neighborhood.

The initial fire, at Fifth Avenue and Second Street, started around 11:25 a.m.:

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Con Ed said, but it could be weather-related from salt that is used to treat the roadway. No one was injured, according to the Con Ed.

Power was shut off to 63 customers so repairs could be made, and their power came back around 4:45 a.m. People who had windows broken were notified about how to get those fixed through Con Ed's claims department.
