PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — A state of disrepair. Exposed and corroded. Compromised conditions. Danger of structural failure.

Those were the grim assessments of a Park Slope parking garage handed down by city inspectors who ordered the 12th Street structure partially vacated last week, Department of Buildings records show.

The shutdown came amid a citywide inspection spree after a Lower Manhattan parking garage collapsed and killed one man April 18.

The landmarked Park Slope building at 429 12th St., between Seventh and Eighth avenues, was among four parking garages that inspectors ordered either fully or partially vacated because they posed an immediate threat to public safety, the New York Times first reported.

"Danger of structural failure," is what the April 27 vacate order reads.

Records show inspectors noted a slew of potential problems, including:

  • Concrete slabs, beams or columns that are exposed and extensively corroded with spalled concrete and cracks
  • Structurally compromised conditions on the second floor slab and vehicle ramp
  • A “state of disrepair” including running cracks on walls and ceilings throughout
  • Rotted and damaged ceiling joists

Car Park Systems, which runs parking inside the building, referred questions to the building's owner.
