Pedestrian Fatally Hit By Garbage Truck Near Barclays: Officials

At the time of the crash the driver was behind the wheel of a garbage truck from the demolition-service company "Safeway," photos show.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — A pedestrian was fatally hit by a garbage truck driver near Barclays Center Friday afternoon, according to officials.

The driver behind the wheel of the truck hit the person on Flatbush Avenue near Atlantic Avenue at about 3:30 p.m., fire officials said.

First responders rushed to the scene, quickly blocking off a lane of Flatbush Avenue in front of the Atlantic Terminal, but couldn't save the person, who was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

The driver was operating a "Safeway" truck at the time of the accident — a privately-operated garbage service for demolition and carting services — according to photos taken at the scene of the crash.

Police said that the driver stayed on the scene of the crash after hitting the pedestrian.

Officials did not confirm the pedestrian's age, gender, or any other details with Patch.

The crash comes amid a 'traffic violence crisis' in New York City, according to a recent Transportation Alternatives report, which found that last month was the deadliest February in the city since 2008, when the city first began publishing crash data.
