Top Park Slope Public School Test Scores Drop In 2022: DOE Data

Schools with traditionally high proficiency scores dropped compared to 2019, with P.S. 321 showing its worst score in five years.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — Top schools in Park Slope saw their scores slip in 2022, while traditionally lower-ranked schools made gains, new city data show.

The Education department data, released on Wednesday, show that P.S. 321 William Penn and P.S. 39 Henry Bristow both saw 5 percent drops in math proficiency in 2022, trending slightly better than the citywide average of a 7.6 percent decline.

But in English, the two top schools bucked the city average of a 1.6 percent increase in proficiency — and not in a positive way.

P.S. 321 saw students test at only 78.9 percent proficiency in 2022, about 5 points lower than 2019's 83 percent score. This years scores represent the school's lowest since 2016.

At P.S. 39, the decline was more subtle and only saw a 2 percent reduction compared to 2019's results, from 92 percent to 90 percent. The school last scored lower than 90 percent in 2018, with just below 86 percent of students testing proficient that year.

Other schools in Park Slope had different results, some very positive and some not so.

P.S. 282 Park Slope saw gains in both subjects, with a 15 percent gain in math and 6 percent in English.

P.S. 133 William A. Butler saw a modest 1 percent gain in math, but an 11 percent drop in English, from 67 percent proficient in 2019 to 59 percent in 2022.

The scores come at a time when the City is looking to resume academic screenings for top public schools, placing an emphasis on scoring.
