Here are the top stories in Patchogue today:
- The Brookhaven landfill has been the solution to many of Long Island’s garbage problems for a long time. But the massive facility is scheduled to close at the end of 2024. And the passage of time has not generated the urgency needed to deal with this looming crisis. Finally, signs of a regional response are emerging. Brookhaven and Babylon, the only local towns with active municipal landfills or ash fills, are collaborating with waste management and business specialists at Stony Brook University on a study to determine the logistical and financial challenges and possible solutions to the landfill’s closure. (Newsday)
- Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to locate a Centereach woman who was reported missing on Dec. 2. Melissa Molinari was last seen at her residence, located on Lolly Lane on Nov.21. Molinari was reported missing yesterday. She left her vehicle at home. (smithtownmatters.com)
- A couple of real-life elves were spotted in Patchogue Village, and, if you’re lucky, you might be able to catch a glimpse of them from now until Dec. 23, as part of the chamber’s “Elf’n Around Patchogue,” a monthlong event that provides deals to shoppers on Main Street wherever the elves are present. “Elf’n Around” does have its benefits. - The 59th annual Patchogue Christmas parade took place this past Saturday evening with a theme of “Whoville Christmas” from the beloved Dr. Seuss book, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Paradegoers were delighted by lights, fire trucks, and creative renditions on the Grinch theme. Patchogue Village mayor Paul Pontieri commented on the parade’s nearly six-decade history. “This parade has been a tradition in Patchogue for 59 years. I can remember coming when I was 9 years old, and still, it’s a tradition all of these years. And, if you look around, you’ll see all of these people out, enjoying themselves, enjoying the floats—and that’s what it’s all about, holiday spirit. It’s a wonderful evening,” he said.
