Here are the top stories today in Patchogue:
- Nassau County Legislator Kevan M. Abrahams (D - Freeport) is partnering with the Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI) to host a Financial Health and Wellness workshop on Thursday, Dec. 9 that is designed to help residents learn how to manage their finances responsibly, grow wealth, and plan for their future. During the webinar, guest speakers are scheduled to discuss topics such as responsible management of finances, building wealth, personal finances, investments, and retirement planning. Residents will also have an opportunity to speak to financial experts and ask questions. For additional information, contact Legislator Abrahams’ office at 516-571-6201. (LongIsland.com)
- Patchogue’s own Sailor Fireman 3rd Class Kenneth L. Jayne was one of the 2,403 U.S. military personnel and civilians who lost their lives during the attack at Pearl Harbor. Saturday morning, three days ahead of the 80th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Jayne — whose remains weren’t identified until 2016 — was at last laid to rest at his family’s plot in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Patchogue. (Greater Long Island)
- The Suffolk County Legislature threw its support Tuesday behind a plan to work with Islip Town on a $2.3 billion Ronkonkoma redevelopment project that includes a convention center, health sciences center and a northern terminal at Long Island MacArthur Airport. Lawmakers voted 17-0, with one abstention, to approve an intermunicipal agreement with Islip to build the 3.1 million square foot Midway Crossing complex, which would connect the new terminal to the Ronkonkoma Long Island Rail Road station. The project also would include a 300-room hotel and a sports complex with indoor and outdoor arenas. (Newsday)
- Police say a man was shot while riding in the back of an SUV in the East Patchogue-North Bellport area. Police said three men were in the SUV when a black sedan pulled up next to them and fired shots into their vehicle. The sedan took off. Police said the SUV pulled into a gas station on Hospital Road in East Patchogue and a good Samaritan drove the man who had been shot to the hospital. The unidentified man is being treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Anyone who has information on this shooting is asked to call police. (News12)
