HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Nights continue to be freezing for a few more days, and then the Hudson Valley climbs into a very different weather pattern: heat and humidity for at least a couple of days.

Welcome to May.

First, the nighttime freeze watch continues — of particular concern to the Hudson Valley's orchards, vineyards and garden centers, and also to anyone who has put out plants or turned on outside pipes and sprinkler systems.

"A warm front passes this morning and a cold front from the northwest passes this afternoon. Breezy conditions are expected with the passage of the cold front," Bruce Furbeck of First Due Weather said on Facebook. "It’s a chilly night. Lows in the upper 20s and low 30s for most of us."

Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing, the National Weather Service warned.

"Temperatures have been much higher than the historical average since the start of the winter. This has forced bud break, blossoming and leaf-out of many forms of vegetation ranging from flowering trees and shrubs to deciduous trees to fruit trees, vines and bushes," said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist. "Anytime a heavy frost or hard freeze occurs after bud-break and leaf-out occurs, there is the risk of damage."

Temps overnight Thursday into Friday and Friday into Saturday are expected to be in the 30s as well.

However, temperatures will jump from 60 on Saturday — on Sunday the highs will be in the high 70s and the low will only be in the high 50s.

High temperatures Monday could even hit the 80s in part of the region, the National Weather Service said.
