Both Hudson Valley teams reached the championship games in the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Summer Hoops Festival this past weekend at Johnson City.
Both lost in Sunday's championship games.
The Hudson Valley boys swept through three preliminary games and the semifinal in pursuit of a second consecutive title, but lost to Adirondack, 77-75, Sunday. Ricky McGill of Spring Valley led the Hudson Valley team with 15 points. Pearl River's Kevin Degnan had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Hudson Valley girls lost to Rochester twice in the tournament, including a 68-58 defeat in Sunday's championship game.
The Hudson Valley teams are made up of players from Section 1 high schools in Rockland and Westchester Counties. Rockland County players made up much of the girls team, including Christine O'Riordan and Ryan Doherty of Albertus Magnus, Nanuet's Alexa Amalbert, Clarkstown South's Laura Castaldo, Tappan Zee's Kristen McLaughlin and Pearl River's Emma Daly.
The boys team included four players from Rockland -- Degnan, McGill, Luke McLaughlin of Tappan Zee and Jordan Duncan of Spring Valley. As he did in 2012, Degnan turned in a strong performance in the BCANY tournament, averaging 15.5 points per contest, including a 24-point outburst in a 90-77 victory over Buffalo.
