Jury Stuck After 1 Verdict Over Blauvelt Nightclub Stabbing

A West Haverstraw man is accused of killing a Nanuet resident and of soliciting child porn while in the Rockland County jail.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — A jury acquitted Darin Peterson, who faced charges of murder, manslaughter, assault and weapons charges over a stabbing at a makeshift dance club in 2021, on the murder charge but failed to reach verdicts on the others, The Journal News reported.

The District Attorney's Office will retry Peterson on the other charges, according to TJN.

In 2021, the Oiso restaurant at 587 Route 303 in Blauvelt was closed to the public and the building was up for sale but it had been functioning as a kind of weekend club. On March 6 there were about 100 people inside the old restaurant, the New York State Liquor Authority reported. The proprietors were serving alcohol but not serving food, which is not allowed under the regulations; people were dancing or just standing around drinking. A fight broke out at around 10:30 p.m. Nanuet resident Caneggio A. Grant, 30, was stabbed and died the next day.

Peterson, 29, is also facing federal charges of soliciting and producing child pornography. According to prosecutors, while incarcerated on the stabbing charges, he and another inmate at the Rockland County Jail enticed a teenaged victim to send them digital content of herself engaged in sexually explicit activity before and after she turned 15.
