Pearl River Girls Lacrosse Falls Without Coach, Four Starters

Pearl River lost at home to Brewster, 7-5, without Head Coach Laurie Mayernik, who has been suspended.

Head Coach Laurie Mayernik was not on the sideline for the Pearl River girls lacrosse team's 7-5 loss at home against Brewster Thursday.

Mayernik is currently suspended, though Pearl River School District Director of Human Resources and Community Services Diana Musich and Director of Athletics Todd Santabarbara both said they could not comment on the situation.

Mayernik also said she can't comment. She is expected to answer to accusations that led to the suspension when the Pearl River Board of Education holds its next meeting April 23.

The Pirates were also missing four starters due to illness or injury and had only one reserve for the contest. Assistant Coach Diana Gillule, who took over the team in Mayernik's absence, said the Pirates wore down at the end of each half. She said playing without the head coach was also difficult for the players.

"It's been a long week for the players not knowing what is going on," Gillule said.

Laurie Mayernik announced earlier this year that 2013 would be her final season as head coach at Pearl River. She is in her 15th season and she led the Pirates to the first section championship in the program's history in 2011.
