Pearl River needed two days and extra innings before defeating South Orangetown, 12-8, in 11 innings to win the District 18 baseball 12-year-old championship Monday night at South Orangetown.
The game was suspended due to lightning with Pearl River leading, 5-2, in the fourth inning Sunday and led by as much as 7-2 Monday before South Orangetown rallied. Dan Almonte's two-run home run highlighted a four-run fifth and South Orangetown scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to force extra innings.
Pearl River's Brian Tarsnane homered in the top of the eighth, but South Orangetown responded with Michael Daly's RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
Pearl River finally put the game away with four runs in the top of the 11th, with a two-run double by Jonathon Farley and Antonio Rinaldi's RBI double.
Sean Flaherty finished the game with four hits, including two home runs, and drove in four runs for Pearl River. Tarsnane had three hits and Farley, Rinaldi and Matt Russo each had two.
Daly, Charlie Garrison and Sean Peterson each had two hits for South Orangetown.
Pearl River will open the Section 4 Tournament 5:45 p.m. Friday against Harrison at Kensico Little League's Pat Henry Field.
