The Pearl River girls tennis team returns five starters as from 2012 as they open the 2013 season 2 p.m. today at home against East Ramapo.
Top singles player Elina Arakelyan and No. 3 Stacey Wang are among those who graduated from a team that went 5-8, leaving a young group with some experience that has only one senior among the five returning starters.
Junior Ciara O'Riordan moves up from second singles to the top spot, with sisters Katia Ariyan, a sophomore, and 8th grader Lina Ariyan also playing singles.
Senior Aileen Burke and sophomore Sinead O'Sullivan went 8-4 as a doubles team last year and will stay together this season. Another pair of sisters, sophomore Jane and freshman Nicole Alkhazov, will play No. 2 doubles.
"We are excited about our young, up and coming group of girls," Pearl River Head Coach Joan Smith said. "They have worked very hard in the off season."
Pearl River opens League IV-B play Sept 17 at home against Nyack and hosts the Pearl River Tournament Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21.
