Pearl River Picks New School Trustees

Here are school budget and board vote results.

PEARL RIVER, NY — Pearl River school district residents approved a 2022-23 school budget on Tuesday and elected two trustees to the Board of Education.

The $77.5 million proposed budget was approved with 76.1 percent of the vote, district officials reported on Facebook.

Six candidates sought trustee seats: Dan Robins, Nicole Lehoczky, Robert Wells, Kristen Sweeney, Denise Caunitz and Terrence Cortelli.

Trustees Robert Davis and Bruce Bond did not seek re-election.

Caunitz and Cortelli were elected to the Board of Education. Receiving the highest number of votes, Caunitz will begin her term immediately, filling the vacated seat held by Bruce Bond. Cortelli’s term commences on July 1, and both newly-elected terms run through June 30, 2024.

The budget is a 4.78 percent spending increase over the current year and it comes with a 2.84 percent hike in the school tax levy. That is within the state's tax cap for the district so the budget only needed to be approved by a majority vote.
