Pearl River Sports: First-Year Football Player Surprises

Senior Aidan Weir came out for the Pearl River football team for the first time this year, but he is already showing he can make an impact for the Pirates.

Weir scored his first varsity touchdown Sunday during completion of the Pirates 42-21 loss to Harrison, a 24-yard catch and run from Chris Van Houten. Weir had to fight through two defenders to get into the end zone. Read more about that gamehere.

Weir also took over as Pearl River's kicker and punter. He made one of two extra points, but showed off his leg strength by consistently putting kickoffs in the end zone.

"He's been a great surprise for us," Pearl River Head Coach Jeff Michael said. "There always seems to be at Pearl River, one kid comes out for his senior year and we were (wondering) where have you been for three years? He played with a lot of fire and intensity. He was that extra voice. Kicking touchbacks. Making that play down there for the sore. He was a fiery player. He brings a different element to our team."

Pearl River (0-2) will play at Walter Panas 6:30 p.m. Friday.
