The Pearl River volleyball team lost standouts Annette Krysiewicz and Victoria Grix to graduation, but the Pirates have a deep class of 10 seniors to rely on this season.
"There is a lot of experience on the team," Pearl River Head Coach Brianna Kenna said. "That's something we're working with, stepping up our defense, but also our offense, with the plays we're running."
Kenna said most of the current team has the chemistry built through playing together since they were on the modified team.
"Overall, it's their maturity level and their understanding and ability to play together," Kenna said. "We have a lot of chemistry and that's huge on the court."
Senior setter Mandy McCarthy will take on an even larger role after sharing setting duties with Grix at times last season. Senior right side hitter Toni Glielmi will also be a key to the Pirates' attack.
Even with all the seniors, juniors Haley Giaramita, Jackie Screene and Sarah Henry could also make an impact for the Pirates.
Pearl River opens the season 4 p.m. Monday against East Ramapo at Spring Valley, then faces Clarkstown South at home 4 p.m. Tuesday.
