Port Chester H.S. Junior Wins NAACP Awards for Her Art
Elizabeth Grey first from PCHS to win such honors.
Port Chester High School junior Elizabeth Grey has won two bronze medals for her artwork, a drawing of a Geisha and a painting featuring a portrait of a friend, in a local NAACP competition.
She is the first student from the high school to be so honored.
Grey has been drawing since 7th grade and started painting in 8th grade. She most enjoys sketching with pencil and is inspired by her memories as well as her emotions.
Described as “creative and artsy,” Grey can always be found with a sketch book in hand. She currently attends classes at BOCES, where she will complete a two year program in commercial art.
Grey plans on continuing with her art work, but plans to study fashion as a major in college.
The NAACP's ACT-SO competition - Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics - is a year-long achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students. It includes 26 categories of competition in the sciences, humanities, business and performing and visual arts.
Students work with local mentors and compete on a local or regional level, with gold medal winners invited to compete in a national competition in July in conjunction with the NAACP National Convention.
