Rain, Freezing Rain, Sleet, Snow Could Ice Up Hudson Valley

The forecast has the whole wintry mix plus a chance of fog and flooding. Here are the details.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — A winter storm and January thaw over much of the Northeast this week could lead to slippery travel Tuesday and Wednesday, forecasters warn.

The National Weather Service predicts a chance of rain, then a mix of rain, snow and sleet, then snow, then rain again.

"It just won’t be warm enough to prevent icing regardless with whatever type of precipitation decides to fall from the sky," Bruce Furbeck of First Due Weather said on Facebook.

The leading edge of the rain will freeze on trees, roads and sidewalks from Illinois to Ohio, southern Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York state and New England, said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.

"It’s not an ice storm, but it can create 0.01 - 0.10” ice accumulation making driving and walking treacherous," Todd Snow of Hudson Valley Weather said on Facebook.

The combination of rising temperatures and rain thrown in with already high stream levels may lead to some flooding along unprotected waterways, Sosnowski said. Also, there's the potential for locally dense fog to develop due to the cold ground or remaining snow cover leading to extra condensation.

Then it's going to become quite warm, with temperatures rising into the mid-50s.
