Temps Above 90, Bad Air Back Too: Hudson Valley Advisories

Heat indices could close in on 100 for most of the work week. Here are the details.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Heat and bad air advisories have been issued for most of the Hudson Valley Monday.

"We've been locked in a hot and humid pattern the last 10 days, and that trend continues as we head into the work week," the folks at Hudson Valley Weather said on Facebook. "Highs are expected to be in the low 90s ... but the high dew points in the mid to upper 70s will make those temperatures feel like the upper 90s and near 100°. Make sure you use proper caution."

An isolated severe thunderstorm is possible during the late afternoon and evening hours Monday, mainly. The primary threat is damaging wind and it is not expected to break the heat wave.

On Monday and Tuesday, the heat index is expected to be in the mid 90s to around 100 in the region, the National Weather Service predicted. It'll be hotter on Wednesday, after high humidity overnight, and the heat index will start in the upper 90s in the region. Northern New Jersey could see isolated heat indices near 105.

"A strong cold front approaches by late Wednesday morning and passes later Wednesday into Thursday. Some cooler weather gets delivered at the end of the week," Bruce Furbeck of First Due Weather said on Facebook.

A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time, the NWS said.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke, call 9 1 1.

Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors. Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk.

Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures. If you don't have home air conditioning, seek out cool spaces each day as long as it remains hot, and for a few days after if your home is still hot.

Those who plan to travel by car should prepare their vehicle before hitting the road. Avoid leaving radios, phone chargers and other accessories running when the engine is not. Check to make sure your air conditioning is properly functioning and coolant is at the proper level. Try to travel with a spare battery. If you plan to travel in less populated areas, bring water and an umbrella for shade if it becomes necessary to leave the car. Always keep air flowing throughout the vehicle, and try to park in the shade, Westchester County health officials said.

New York State has an interactive map of cooling centers.

Dutchess County has a link for cooling centers here.

Rockland County also collects information about cooling centers and other places to cool off and get a break from the heat. Always call before you go to make sure the cooling center is open.

In Westchester, residents who need a place to cool off can check its Cooling Center Finder. When it is too hot at home, senior centers, libraries, community centers and indoor malls offer a respite from the heat. Call before you go to be sure of the hours.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
