City Releases Violent Crime Numbers

Violent crime in the City of Peekskill has been cut in half since 2007, officials say.

Here is a list of the total number of violent crimes committed in Peekskill over the last several years:

  • 2006 — 68
  • 2007 — 73
  • 2008 — 54
  • 2009 — 34
  • 2010 — 31
  • 2011 — 36
  • 2012 — 37
  • 2013 — 14 (through May)
The city released the information after launching Operation Safe Streets. The program is aimed at reducing the number of illegal and illegally-possessed guns in the city.

Police Chief Eric Johansen said crime in Peekskill is "much lower than in comparable cities," according to a press release.

"Peekskill is a close-knit community and violence is not tolerated," he said in the statement. "People are not afraid to speak up."
