CORTLANDT, NY — The town of Cortlandt released its proposed budget for 2023 with a 1.1 percent increase in the tax levy.

Supervisor Richard Becker said, with the proposed tax levy increase, the town has come in below the state tax cap mandate of 2 percent.

He said a portion of the unused funds will be carried over for use in future years.

The spending package is $46.2 million, Becker said, with $45.3 million of revenue from property taxes and other sources.

“The budget is balanced by using unexpended fund balance in order to give back to the taxpayers,” he said.

Becker said the tax levy is $22,029,299, which is up 1.1 percent from 2022’s $21,786,747.

Cortlandt has managed to maintain its savings, he said, with the 2021 fiscal year fund balance at $19.8 million.

The town has also received sizable grants from federal, state and county governments to assist with operating costs and capital projects, including $3.2 million for infrastructure and riverfront projects in Verplanck and $3.2 from the American Rescue Act of 2021 for sewer and water projects for the town.

Cortlandt’s Town Board will be holding a special meeting at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 to receive and file the supervisor’s proposed budget.

Work sessions on the budget will be held during November, with the final vote on the budget at the Dec. 5 Town Board meeting.
