5. Dr. Becker Concedes to Maloney

In Tuesday’s congressional primary, Dr. Richard Becker, the town councilman who was facing four democratic opponents for Rep. Nan Hayworth’s seat in this year’s election, conceded to Sean Maloney. Maloney was an advisor to President Bill Clinton at the White House. He also serves as a first deputy secretary to New York governors David Paterson and Eliot Spitzer. He has received endorsements from Clinton, along with the Putnam County, Philipstown and Southeast Democratic committees.

Here is Becker’s Statement:

"I'd like to congratulate my opponent for his victory tonight and wish him the best of luck in the general election. The Hudson Valley can't afford two more years of this Tea Party Congress. One term was one too many for Nan Hayworth.

She's part of the problem in Washington, and we Democrats need to be part of the solution.

The stakes are just too great for anyone who supported me to sit this campaign out. I wish the voters had made a different choice, but as Democrats we have to respect that decision and move forward together."
