‘Gasland’ Screening, WPHS to Study the Hudson, 1998 Peekskill Website
Here are five things you need to know today, Oct. 18.

1.HVHC Raised $1,000 for Scholarships
Yesterday, the Hudson Valley Hospital Center Auxiliary announced that it successfully raised more than $1,000 at its bake sale on Oct. 7. The annual event raises money to support the hospital and to provide scholarships to deserving college bound high school students each year. Auxiliary sources say this year’s sale was such a success that all the goodies were gone by 3 p.m. The early bird catches the worm, or in this case, the sour cream coffee cake.

2. Walter Panas Students Spend a “Day in the Life of the Hudson River”
Walter Panas High School AP Environmental students will be at Riverfront Green today to sample its water and life this morning.. The trip is part of a greater activity by the Department of Conservation when dozens of schools travel from New York City upstate to study the river and then share their data to understand how their piece of the river fits into the larger Hudson estuary ecosystem. In 2010, more than 3,500 students participated at 63 locations on the estuary.

3. 1998 Website About Peekskill
We stumbled across this interesting website from more than ten years ago that includes photos of some spots in Peekskill and information on the city’s supposed relation to the 1940s-50s comic Little Lulu. The author writes about the Center Diner and how it resembles the "Sunset Diner" depicted in the Little Lulu cartoons. Check it out here.
4. Public Hearing on Route 6 Cottages
The Town of Cortlandt will hold a public hearing on issuing a residential reuse special permit for, the development that is planned to replace the 56 dilapidated cottages off of Route 6. The regular Town Board meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. For the agenda, click here.
5. ‘Gasland’ Screening on Saturday
New York State Senator Greg Ball announced a Gasland screening that will be held at the neighborhood center in Peekskill on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Sen. Ball and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Josh Fox will be at the screening, which is part of the senator’s
