Kane’s Campaign Practices Found ‘Unfair’ by County Committee

Westchester County Legislature Candidate John Testa's complaints regarding his opponent Michael Kane's campaign practices were ruled valid during a meeting of the county's Fair Campaign Practices Committee yesterday.

According to a statement, Testa claimed Kane has “'repeatedly made materially false representations on various sources’” including campaign materials and his website stating that he was ‘endorsed by the Independence Party.’”

The Westchester County Fair Campaign Practices Committee, chaird by Evelyn Stock, ruled Kane’s practice on that item unfair.

“Michael Kane was not endorsed by the Independence Party. Indeed he lost the primary and his name will not appear on the Independence Party line,” the committee decided.

On a second complaint, regarding Kane’s campaign materials and website, Testa complained that Kane falsely stated that he had “served on the Westchester Board of Legislators Environment Committee.”

The Committee also found this to be an unfair campaign practice.

“Michael Kane did not serve on the Westchester County Board of Legislators Environment Committee nor has he been a County Legislator. Mr. Kane admitted that several years ago he served on a citizen's environmental committee headed by a County Legislator.”

John Testa and Michael Kane are both seeking the District 1 seat in the Westchester County Legislature during next Tuesday's election, which includes all or parts of Yorktown, Cortlandt and Peekskill.
