Letter to the Editor: Icing on the Cake

Joseph Ernst, new to Peekskill, writes a homage to North Division street in a city that he has found to be welcoming, accepting and the icing on his cake.

As an eye in the sky or a butterfly on a wall in a great town known and named, Peekskill. The focus of concentration falls upon a thriving, heart pumping, good-time having street, North Division Street. It’s emergence on the social map has seemed to happen over a long mystical night and has graciously appeared by virtue of necessity, Peekskill will reap the benefits of all the awe inspiring restaurants,11 grapes are certain to please almost anyone, but 12 grapes are for those who expect that “something extra”.

Dependent on your taste bud preferences, you may savor the fine foods and drinks of Ireland, eat an appetite pleasing dinner from Italian descended menus or ease oneself across the pavement and enjoy the delicacies from the grill of grills. All the while listening to soft, soothing piano melodies, a friend full of fun ,named Rueben’s,will waste away your stressors by overindulging you with upbeat music and upbeat people.

Incredibly talented artists placate this haven and please you with their wonderful wisdom and with a slight of the hand, you may find the magician for hire whose talents are of multitude to include pin prickling acupuncture, a regal realtor with a heart of gold will place you in an abode to your desires and days of rest will be plenty. And in the mix, rests one  AWESOME, breath-consuming boutique that will leave you redecorating your décor.

Ear tantalizing music levitates out of each eagerly accommodating enterprise and gently flows and engulfs one heck of a street, North Division Street. The weekends here, are a jar of energy, with its lid screwed off and skyrocketed to the moon. The weekdays, AH, are just a mere step down from a Friday or a Saturday. The entrepreneurs of North Division Street should be patted on the back for their insight and bravado, for investing themselves, their talents, their sweet sweat and joyous tears, their families as well as their lives and dreams of sugar plums dancing in their slumber. I am grateful to them for placing themselves and

North Division Street into a multitude of conversations, from the breakfast tables to the board meetings. All who directly and indirectly have become enlightened to the fact, which obviously stretches out across a wide territory. North Divison Street has arrived in full, and its bloom is ever so beautiful and outlasting through all seasons.

A well fitting analogy, would be to place North Division Street parallel to a beautiful  wedding cake, made and sculptured for a princess in all its splendor and richness. Each shop a representation of a tier of this tasteful delight. Each owner in particular is in essence a slice of this delectable dessert. I must complete this North Division Street treat, by descriptively finishing it literally, with the icing of this cake. The servitude of a dessert is a signification of a completion of a long stay. Ah, Not in this case. In this story it represents a beginning. I must say my stay is just on its way.

Through only my eye, I am the icing in all its glory. From my ernest point of view the more sugar I am around the sweeter my life will be. The more music I hear, the stronger the sound of my heart which now beats down the street of North Division Street.

Who am I? I’m a man, just your everyday Joe. I come from a place I call home, on the other side of the city. I’ve been and lived places, on the ends of the United States. I’ve been on the other side of the Bering Strait. The Berlin Wall had me on both sides. France was one hell of a freaky Friday night. Amsterdam was but a blur. Austria, I met up with a dear friend. Mexico was margaritas and madness. With no pun intended, Peekskill, Peekskill is the peak of my travels of today I declare. The icing of MY CAKE, served to me on golden china with an aftertaste of a fearless future full of faith with blessings and thankfulness to North Division Street.
