$2.8 Million Main Street Rehab Project Starts Monday

Westchester County’sto a 2.14 mile stretch of Main Street in Peekskill is expected to start Monday, July 16. The construction will run from Route 9 to Conklin Avenue on West and East Main Street and start on the west part of the street near Route 9 at the Inn on the Hudson, According to the county’s construction coordinator Nick Rienzi.

Rienzi will meet with city officials and police Monday, July 16, and start preliminary work on Main Street, he said. Construction will mostly begin towards the end of the week. Construction hours will be from around 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the week and the road should be opened for normal traffic during off hours, Rienzi said.

Officials expect to keep traffic flowing in both directions during construction with either police or flaggers and are considering setting up detours if possible, Rienzi said. There will be periodic parking restrictions, which will be denoted with advance warning signs, according to the County Department of Public Works and Transportation.  The work will include milling and asphalt paving, pavement repairs, curb replacement, curb cuts, bus pad installation, drainage installation and repair, and additional items. 

Main Street is the only corridor heading east from Rt. 9 and carries a daily average of almost 10,000 vehicles, according to County Legislator John Testa’s office. Almost a third of those vehicles are commercial trucks supplying and picking up goods at local businesses. The Westchester County Board of Legislators approved a bond act in the amount of $2.8 million for the project in Oct. 2011.

“The Main St./Rt. 6 corridor is a major east/west thoroughfare for all of Northern Westchester. I am pleased the work to rehabilitate the Westchester County portion of the road is about to begin," Testa said. "Local County –owned infrastructure improvements are a priority for me and I am glad to build on last year’s upgrades to Blue Mountain and George’s Island parks with this year’s Main Street project.”

The County of Westchester Department of Public Works and Transportation issued the following message Friday, July 14:

Here are some suggestions from Patch for alternative routes:

Going East: Bear Mountain Parkway from Route 9 to the Route 6 exit

Going West: enter the Bear Mountain Parkway at Route 6 to get to Route 9

Crompond Road/Route 202. However, there is a state construction project in progress on Rte 202 at Conklin Avenue as well which causes some delays near the Hudson Valley Hospital Center in both directions.

From Yorktown, heading west, you can take Route 202 to Croton Avenue, turn right on Furnace Dock Road, right on Maple avenue, left on Hudson Avenue, which will lead to Route 9. Do the reverse to go east.
