NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital will host a variety of community events in September.

Westchester County, N.Y. - (August 22, 2016) – NewYork-Presbyterian today announced a series of community events available to the public during the month of September. From a Breast Cancer survivor cooking class to a dinner with the doctor event discussing prostate cancer and a mother/baby health fair, there is much to explore at NewYork-Presbyterian’s hospitals in Westchester.

Breast Cancer Survivor Cooking for Health (FREE)

In this unique cooking class, breast cancer survivors have the opportunity to learn about healthy foods that increase energy and promote recovery and healing. Chef Emilie Berner has developed a seasonal nutritious lesson accompanied by hands-on cooking in our Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen. Attendees will sample the nutritious and healing meals they create in class. (Free)
Farmers’ Market at NYP/Hudson Valley Hospital
September 6 & 20, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
Location: Hospital Main Lobby
Stop by our bi-monthly farmers’ market, held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month through November, to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. Also available at the market are locally baked goods, jams, ketchup, body products, dog treats, wood-fired pizza, Mediterranean lunches, as well as locally grass-fed beef. We welcome EBT/SNAP customers. Free, flexible transportation is available within a 5 mile radius. Call Act Now Taxi at 914-930-7888 by 5:00 pm Monday to reserve your ride.
Breastfeeding Support Group

Cancer Awareness Health Fair: Learn about Ovarian, Prostate and Blood Cancers

NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital’s annual Cancer Awareness Fair provides our community with the opportunity to learn about the latest information, treatments, and support services available for patients with ovarian, prostate and blood cancers. Complimentary refreshments and giveaways will be available.
Cooking Class: Family Friendly Back to School Breakfasts

It is so easy to fall into a “breakfast rut.” That means that more often than not, you’re reaching for the same cereals, the same juices, the same coffee and milk. Breakfast is an essential way to set you up for the day! We will be cooking wholesome muffins for a grab and go option, gluten-free and vegan 10 minute banana pancakes, and an egg dish that sneaks in the veggies too. Come learn some new tricks the whole family is sure to enjoy! ($15)
“Lunch and Learn” Prostate Cancer: Symptoms & Treatments

Dr. Namrata Patel of ColumbiaDoctors, the faculty practice of Columbia University Medical Center, and Medical Director of NYP/Hudson Valley Hospital’s Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide information on the different components involved in prostate cancer diagnoses, the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach, and review current and new treatment options which are improving not only disease control, but also the quality of life for patients with advanced prostate cancer.

Cooking for Seniors

As we grow older, our bodies change in subtle ways and these changes aren’t all visible. Many of the invisible changes affect the way our body reacts to the food that we eat. These changes are why cooking for seniors can be different from cooking for other age groups. In this class you will learn a few tips that will help you cook safe, nutritious, and delicious meals for seniors. A lunch, prepared together, will be served. ($15)
