Parolee Nabbed After Injuring Officer in Peekskill

Walter Herring , 30, of Newburgh, was arrested after he hit a parole officer with a car on Sept. 18. The arrest comes less than a week after Herring was released on parole from Bare Hill Correctional facility.

A Newburgh man is scheduled to appear in Peekskill city court Thursday after he rammed a vehicle into a parole officer who was pursuing him on North James Street last week.

Peekskill city police arrested Walter Herring, 30, of Newburgh, on Sept. 18 and charged him with second-degree assault, a Class D felony.

At about 4:30 p.m., parole officers approached Herring on North James Street and tried to bring him into custody, but Herring went into the rear seat of a vehicle and tried to escape. The driver of the vehicle tried to stop, but Herring jumped in the front seat and attempted to drive off.

Herring hit one of the parole officers before Peekskill police were able to stop him on Brown Street. The parole officer was transported to Hudson Valley Hospital where he was treated an released.

Prior to this incident, Herring was convicted on a felony drug possession charge in 2006. He was released from the Bare Hill Correctional Facility on parole Sept. 14.

Herring was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and violating parole. He was sent to Westchester County Jail without bail.
