A 26-year-old Poughkeepsie man is facing several charges—including false personation and petty larceny—after he stole shrimp from the local ShopRite, got into a physical fight there and provided police with a false name, authorities said.
State police from the Cortlandt barracks arrested the man at about 5:15 p.m. Sept. 22. The incident occurred earlier that afternoon.
"Troopers responded to the ShopRite parking lot for a report of two subjects involved in a physical altercation," police said in a statement released Monday. "Upon troopers' arrival, they interviewed a loss prevention officer from ShopRite who reports that he was attempting to detain a shoplifter prior to contacting police, and the incident became physical. The suspect ... was observed stealing a large quantity of shrimp from the store."
The man was taken into custody, processed and released on an appearance ticket. His fingerprints were later rejected by the Department of Criminal Justice and investigation showed that he had given police a false first name, according to officials.
The defendant is facing the following misdemeanors: false personation, falsifying business records in the second degree and petty larceny. He was also charged with second-degree harassment, a violation. He was arraigned in the Town of Cortlandt and sent to the Westchester County Jail on $10,000 bail.
