5. Domestic Violence Awareness Month
The New York State Office for Prevention of Domestic Violence is asking everyone to show their support for Awareness of Domestic Violence by wearing purple throughout the month of October, and especially today, Oct. 19. Peekskill Police Lt. Cathy Johansen addressed the issue in an email:
It is unfortunate that in Peekskill, the police department sees way too many cases of violence between domestic partners, boyfriends & girlfriends, and those who share children in common, documenting 74 more calls this year than last year at this time. The effects of this violence are staggering and long ranging. Many of us know of at least one person who is or has been a victim of such abuse.
Thank you in advance for your participation in this educational cause. If you would like further information you can access OPDV’s website, www.opdv.state.ny.us or call the state hotline (800-942-6906). Our local Victim’s Assistance Office located at 709 Main Street (914-739-8046) is also a fantastic resource for victims and/or those who know of a victim and would like some guidance.
