The investigation began when police received complaints on March 17 and March 26 from two separate people who alleged that Godwin asked them to deposit checks in their accounts in exchange for cash. In both cases the checks were later returned after being written on closed accounts, police said.
Police said Godwin had forged the checks prior to having them deposited.
