PELHAM MANOR, NY — A handful of cities in New York are already permitted to issue citations for violations captured and now Pelham Manor will likely be the first village in the state to get permission to do the same.

Village officials are asking the state for permission to use the red-light cameras in a bid to improve pedestrian safety at the intersection known as Four Corners. If approved, the cameras would issues tickets to motorists at the heavily trafficked intersection at US 1 (Boston Post Road) and Pelhamdale Avenue.

The pedestrian crosswalks connect residential neighborhoods and nearby schools with retail and dining outlets at the Four Corners shopping plaza. The village recently received approval to re-time crosswalk signals and traffic lights to help improve pedestrian safety at the intersection. The crossroads are often manned by police and crossing guards during the hours when children are going to and from school.

Pelham Manor Mayor Jennifer Monachino Lapey told the village trustees that the neighboring jurisdiction of New Rochelle was a reliable resource in helping the village to navigate the legislative and study procedures in the effort toward getting cameras up and running. New Rochelle is one of just three jurisdictions in Westchester County permitted by the state to use red light cameras.

Senate Bill S415A, which would allow the village to begin to issue red light violations captured on traffic cameras at the Four Corners intersection, has passed both the NY State Senate and Assembly. The measure would still require the governor's signature before going into effect.
