Red Monkey Theater Group Presents 'Sherlock Holmes: The Final Problem'

The show will run April 1-23 at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased online

From Red Monkey Theater Group: Red Monkey Theater Group (RMTG), resident theater company at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, presents SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE FINAL PROBLEM, adapted by Tal Aviezer from the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Performances are April 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 21, 22, and 23, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm, in Cahill Theater on the campus of the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 6301 Riverdale Avenue, Riverdale, NY 10471. The great detective Sherlock Holmes and his faithful friend John Watson face a climactic confrontation with Professor Moriarty in what could be their final case. "Our intimately-staged production of SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE FINAL PROBLEM will bring the audience into 221B Baker Street to join Holmes and Watson in solving a bizarre, funny, and thrilling mystery," says Red Monkey Theater Group Artistic Director Tal Aviezer. "Long-time Sherlockians and new fans will love this faithful adaptation of one of Holmes’ most famous cases.”

The play is the fifth installment in a series of Holmes adventures adapted for the stage by Aviezer for performances in Cahill Theater and at Lyndhurst, a gothic revival mansion in Tarrytown, New York. This latest adventure draws upon elements from three of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories: The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton, The Final Problem, and The Adventure of the Empty House.

The play is directed by Holland Renton (Larchmont), with production design by Carolyn Fuchs (Hastings-on-Hudson). It will feature a live musical underscore performed by Curtis Becraft (White Plains) and Viola Wang (Harlem). The cast includes Av iezer (Hastings-on-Hudson), Joe Laureiro (Yonkers), Lawrence J. Reina (Port Chester), Amy Frey (Hoboken), Derek Tarson (Nyack), and Elizabeth Mialaret (New Rochelle).
As a companion piece to the play, RMTG will also offer a free workshop on “Creating Theater from Narrative Literature” onSaturday, April 22nd at 2pm. In a 90-minute class, Sherlock Holmes playwright Tal Aviezer discusses his process for adapting Sir Arthur Conan’s stories for the stage, then offer advice on how participants can create their own short theater pieces from classic stories.

SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE FINAL PROBLEM is the fourth play in Red Monkey Theater Group’s 2016-2017 “Season of Life After Death,” presented in Cahill Theater at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. This season, the company will explore the idea of symbolic or literal resurrection. The season will conclude in May with DEAD MAN’S CELL PHONE by Sarah Ruhl.

Founded in 1999, The Red Monkey Theatre Group (RMTG) is the resident theater company of the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY. A non-profit performing arts company operating out of the newly-renovated Cahill Theater, RMTG is dedicated to enriching local communities through the cultivation, creation, and presentation of live theater.

Company members have trained with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, the Moscow Arts Theater, Lincoln Center Theater and other diverse institutions and programs. Recent productions include the company's original dramatic adaptation of Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, which enjoyed a month-long run at The Mazer Theater on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The group's Shakespearean productions have toured Westchester and the Bronx for the past several seasons, and RMTG productions have appeared regularly as part of ArtsWestchester’s acclaimed Live at the X performance series.
