Like many of us on Valentine's Day, residents at many skilled nursing facilities across the five boroughs had a blast. The recreation directors ensured that their residents were not forgotten on this holiday. Why should they be? Many of those of advanced age remember when Valentine's Day was pure, as deep, delicious dark or milk chocolate hearts, and they loved those homemade buttered Valentine's Day cookies with red sugar sprinkles. Sure, you order these items online these days, but there's much to be said about taking a cold winter's walk on Valentine's Day morning to the nearest corner chocolate store or family-run bakery to purchase these sweets for your loved one.

The residents at Beth Abraham Center on Allerton Avenue in the Bronx had a fun Valentine's Day earlier this month as the Recreation team threw a fun Valentine's Day party for all residents who filled the Recreation room. Each resident was asked why Valentine's Day is so special to them and they all gave their thoughts and wishes. The residents also created their own Valentine's Day cards for all to read.

At Triboro Center on Teller Avenue, love and togetherness was felt throughout the 405-bed skilled nursing facility. The Recreation Department did a beautiful job by supplying so many sweet treats to the residents and they enjoyed a special lunch with live music. The residents all got together and shared heartfelt and joyful stories from their past and enjoyed the laughter. With the live music, some of the residents even danced and sang along to the sounds of classic soul and R&B. Creating this special day, the Recreation Department planned this for many weeks, creating from scratch, hand-made props.
