Briarcliff Students Pop Profits at Annual Popcorn Factory

The students manned popcorn machines in the cafeterias and carried out assembly line-like tasks like popping, inspecting, and selling.

From Todd Elementary School: Inspectors, baggers and sellers were just some of the roles Briarcliff Manor second-graders took on during Todd Elementary School’s annual Popcorn Factory.

The factory is the culmination of the grade’s studies about the economy.

“They learn about producers and consumers,” said second-grade teacher Michelle Kiger. “The students learn that they are taking a loan out from the bank to pay for the [popcorn].”

For two days, the students manned popcorn machines in both of the school’s cafeterias and carried out assembly line-like tasks, including popping, inspecting, salting, tasting and selling bags of popcorn to their peers during lunchtime. The process gave them real life experience in learning about the various components of the economy.

New this year were popcorn machines funded by the Briarcliff Manor Education Foundation. Additional funds generated from the popcorn sales will be donated to charities selected by the students.
