Port Chester Begins Model American Community Summer Internship Program

Thank you to Rye Town volunteer media coordinator Dick Hubert for submitting this press release on Port Chester’s summer internship program.

Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin and the Rye Town Council announced today the beginning of the Town’s second Model American Community Summer Internship Program.

During the first week the internship (July 8-12), seven high school students participated in a job-readiness workshop conducted by the Town. The workshop included classes on job search skills, resume writing, interviewing and job performance. The workshop culminated with the students being interviewed by community organizations and then matched with an organization to work 15-20 hours a week for the next five weeks. The interns will receive a stipend of $5/hour from the Town.

The organizations participating in this year’s program included the Clay Arts Center, Family Services of Westchester, the NAACP, Port Chester Cares, Port Chester Children’s Place, Port Chester Head Start, St Frances AME Zion Church, the Town of Rye and the Village of Port Chester.

As a special feature of the internship, the interns will be mentored by college students from Manhattanville College and Norwalk Community College who will meet with the students weekly to listen to their questions about workplace issues and help them understand constructive ways to respond.

Town Supervisor Joe Carvin described the program as a wonderful example of “the positive impact that can occur when the Town public reaches out to the community to understand its issues – like youth employment – and works in partnership with the community to resolve the issue and make the Town a Model American Community.”
