Red Cross 'Passion' Helps Port Chester Through Storm

Countless residents helped by local and far-flung volunteers.

A team of Red Cross volunteers—some local, and others from as far as Texas—pitched in throughout Port Chester Monday night during Sandy, aiding residents and likely saving lives.

The storm claimed four lives throughout the region.

“There were 57 people at the Port Chester High School shelter., [but] that’s not the story,” Port Chester mayor Dennis Pilla told Patch Tuesday morning.

“The red cross mobilized a team of about 10 persons from Texas, North Carolina and New York City,” Pilla continued.  “They never worked together before. They came as volunteers and have been ‘on’ 24-7 since Sunday.”

“The passion they have in their hearts you can strongly feel from their words,” he added.
